The year 2016 will mark Linda Neil’s 42nd year in Mexican real estate. It will also mark the 25th Anniversary of the Settlement Company® which she founded in May of 1991.
She has been in real estate for all her adult life and become a Mexican and International legend. Her first job was conducting real estate bus tours in the Sierra foothills in California, She met her husband Peter Neil and they developed property in the Sierras. In 1972, she came to live in Mexico. She and Peter opened the first real estate company in the state of Michoacán. She was also co-founder of ROMALI, a music school for children. Following Peter’s death she took her two daughters born in Uruapan, Michoacan, to California to study English. Linda set up an independent Brokerage. Alas her heart remained in Mexico and she returned.
This led to another first for Linda, establishing the first Title and Escrow Company
in Baja California Sur. This was partially the result of the community not having a
neutral third party depository for Buyer and Seller documents and funds. She said,”
In those days, sales contracts were literally being written on the backs of cocktail
napkins.”The company, using Yardi software from Santa Barbara, California,
introduced the MLS concept to the Baja peninsula and to Mexico. Listings were
available online and a monthly hard copy MLS book was produced and distributed.
Michael Schaible, president of the now 400 member MLS-BCS recalls, “ It is truly
amazing where we have come from the original zeroz photo copy booket of available
properties to the now 3000 listings on-line. Linda Neil truly was and remains a
visionary in our industry.”
Linda has been a pioneer in real estate education in Mexico. In the early years of her
company, she delivered three Seminars each year. In October it was for new agents and returning ones to review new legislation affecting the real estate industry. A second one would be for the public at large and the third one for members in the industry.
Jon Savage, then Director of Palmilla, and Linda developed “Share Sessions.” He would bring his sales team to the Settlement Company, a six pack of beer, and they would share knowledge concerning real estate law.
She would go on to obtain various accreditations from the National Association of Realtors® (NAR) and become certified to teach classes both for NAR and the Real Estate Negotiation Institute of Arizona. In 1999 She was in Chicago at NAR Headquarters working with two others to write the course, “Doing Business in Mexico.”
Jeffrey Hornberger, Executive Vice President of The Women’s Council of Realtors and former Director of Global Business Alliances at NAR said,” I have worked in organized Mexico real estate since 2000. Industry players come and go, but the Settlement Company stays. Linda Neil has worked tirelessly to educate thousands of Realtors on Mexico real estate, she is a globally recognized speaker and trusted industry expert, and has volunteered tirelessly her time and expertise to organizations such as NAR and AMPI. Congratulations on 25 years, and being such an integral part of the international real estate industry in Mexico!
In 1994, Linda introduced the Mexican Association of Real Estate Professionals to Los Cabos. Since then she has served three two year terms on AMPI’s National Advisory Board, headed up its International Commission and did a three year stint as NAR’s Presidential Liaison to Mexico. In 2012 she worked through agreements with NAR Global to declare every AMPI Associate member also a REALTOR® through the NAR International Realtor® program.
More recently, she along with three other Mexican realtors dedicated to education, has founded Global Mexico Real Estate Institute. It is a Mexican civil association with a focus on international education
Thank you Linda for your many contributions to the Mexican real estate community and congratulation on the 25th anniverary of The Settlement Company.
