finding the right neighborhood (La Paz)

Many people make the decision to move to Mexico, either permanently to work or retire, or in the form of
a vacation or investment home.

Once you have decided on the town that you would like to live in and the type of property that you would like to buy or rent, you need to weigh up the options for which part of town to move to.

Many people make the decision to move to Mexico, either permanently to work or retire, or in the form of a vacation or investment home.

Once you have decided on the town that you would like to live in and the type of property that you would like to buy or rent, you need to weigh up the options for which part of town to move to.

When weighing up where to buy your new home in Mexico there are 5 points to consider to help you pick the best neighborhood for you.

Here are my top 5 items to consider:

Views – You might have found everything exactly as you want it, but if there isn’t a view from the home then that can be a deal breaker for many.  So if you really want a home with a view then make sure to prioritize this in your list as it could rule out many areas.

Culture – You can find a great neighborhood that ticks all of your boxes, but if it isn’t the culture you are looking for you may end up hating it.  Take a walk around the streets and get talking to a few of the neighbors and find out a little about current residents and what type of lifestyle they live.

Convenience – For some walking distance is a must have however it can limit your options, so think carefully about how near to or far from certain amenities you would like to be.

Noise – You don’t want to find out too late that your peaceful retreat backs up to a large High School with multiple drop off and pick up times a day or has a large wedding salon down the street that plays loud music every night.  Stop by at a few different times throughout the day to see how the neighborhood changes, what might be a quiet little street on a Sunday afternoon might turn out to be very different during the week or at night.

Future Plans – Nothing is ever certain however always check into future plans and weigh up potential impacts.  Sometimes future projects can be excellent news for a neighborhood bringing additional amenities however they also have the potential to hurt property values, especially if they may block your view or bring additional noise.

Prioritize each of the above points to help your real estate agent recommend the best areas in town to check out.

In La Paz, Baja California Sur, which is located 2 and a half hours drive north from the Cabo Airport, you will find there are a number of different neighborhoods to choose from.  La Paz is 15 miles from one side of the town, so of course there are many different areas in between and there is something for everyone.

Here are just a few of the different areas in La Paz to discuss with your real estate agent:

The Beaches – Resort style living only 5 minutes in the car to town, right by amazing beaches and with spectacular views.

El Centenario and El Comitan – A peaceful, laid back atmosphere with sand streets and Colonial/Missionary style homes. Larger than normal lot sizes, great views and primarily single story homes makes this area very popular with the retiree community.

Downtown/Malecon – Step out of your door and walk anywhere, this is the heart of this wonderful city.  Within a few blocks, or less, you are on the beautiful water front boardwalk, this is Mexico.

Lomas de Palmira and Colinas del Sol – On the hilltops overlooking the city you will find many large residential homes and condominium buildings.  Larger lot sizes, great views and only a few minutes drive into the center of town.  Modern Mexican architecture within a number of private gated communities.

If you are interested in buying or renting in Mexico contact your local MLS member to discuss the options available to you and to find the perfect place for your new home.
