Exploring the East Cape- One of the adventures that can be taken, is to take the road from the airport to Cabo Pulmo and north. You will be traveling through ranch land and then coming down to the coast and traveling north. There are many homes built on the coast or in small ex-pat communities along the way, and miles of unspoiled beaches. On a real estate tour, you will see the few special homes and properties that are for sale (property search www.mlsinbajasur.com East Cape South) or as a day away from town you can visit the many pristine beaches and special locations along the way.
To start the tour turn right (traveling to the airport) at the last stop light before the airport and follow the pavement through the mango orchards. The pavement ends at the large arroyo (dry river bed) and proceed across the arroyo and enter the small village of Santa Catarina with paved streets. On your left is the community school, then turn left at the “T” intersection and follow the main road, which turns to dirt after the village and travel until you reach an intersection 10 km. from Highway 1. Turn left at the intersection at the highway sign for Palo Escopeta and Castillo de Arena.
Travel 10 kilometers to the village of Palo Escopeta, a small ranching community and the area school. The school services children through secondary school and the students’ board at the school from Monday through Friday. It has approximately 60 students.
From Palo Escopeta it is 15.5 km. to the coast at Vinorama and the Punta Perfecto surf break. Turning north (left) there are a few beachfront and hillside homes and the Vida Soul boutique hotel (www.vidasoul.com) and restaurant. The hotel hosts great musicians and open mike nights, usually on Saturdays.
Traveling north 3 km is the Costa de Oro subdivision with MLS listed lots and new homes under construction. At km 3.5 is the exceptional Bed and Breakfast, Villa del Faro overlooking the Sea of Cortez (www.villadelfaro.net) and then a very nice white sand swimming beach. At Km. 6.5 is a small residential subdivision called Pindoco and then at Km 8.5 is the large Boca del Salado arroyo with good beach access. Traveling another ½ km there is the Boca del Salado subdivision which features waterfront and view homes. From Km 10.5 to Km 11 is the largest residential community in the area, Castillo de Arena. Between Castillo de Arena West and South there is good beach access to an exceptional beach and dramatic sand dune. There are a few homes and lots available at www.mlsinbaja.com . Traveling north to Km. 19 is the beautiful Las Frailes bay, which is one of the few reliable anchorages on the East Cape. There is a fish camp and in season you can buy fish fresh off the boat.
Further along to Km 23 is the best beach in Baja. Called Arebolitos, it is within Cabo Pulmo Maritime Park and is great for snorkeling and beach fun. There are washrooms and a small taco stand and wheelchair access to the beach. There is a nominal charge but well worth the cost as there is secure parking.
At Km 26 there is the resort community of Cabo Pulmo. The village has 5 restaurants, various dive shops and beach toy rentals along with panga boat tours to the reefs, isolated beaches and a sea lion colony. There are rental Bungalows and it is a great escape from city life.
The pavement starts at Km 37, or 11 Km. north of Cabo Pulmo and along the way there is the subdivision of Las Barracus. At the start of the pavement there is a great view of Punta Arena and miles of white sand beaches. The town of La Ribera is 14 km. away on the pavement and gas and services are available. Enjoy your drive. A few driving tips. If you have a full size vehicle lower your tire pressure to 20 pounds and try to drive at 35 MPH or faster, you will find it smooth’s out the ride and you have better control of your car.
